"4th and Jackson Topeka: Poor Bills"
Art Print of a Watercolor Painting By Romani American Artist J.A. George AKA; The GYPSY
"4th and Jackson Topeka: Poor Bills" captures the essence of a bygone era in Topeka, Kansas, through the skilled lens of Romani American artist J.A. George, also known as The GYPSY. This art print, derived from a watercolor painting, transports viewers back to the streets of 1970 Topeka, offering a vivid portrayal of a significant intersection.
At the heart of the scene lies Poor Bills, affectionately known as the Bluebird, a neighborhood tavern situated on the fringes of downtown, a mere block away from the Police Department at 5th & Jackson. The establishment becomes a focal point, encapsulating the local culture and serving as a backdrop for various community stories.
The background of the artwork unveils the backside of the Norva Hotel, once a residence for those on Topeka's Skid Row. This inclusion adds layers to the narrative...
I am a Romani American Artist. My name is J.A. George but you may call me, as my friends do, The GYPSY. As a former Zookeeper and lifelong lover of nature I have a unique perspective on Animals and Conservation. When I create my art, whether Animal or Landscape or both combined, I seek not to create reality or fantasy but to find the spirit of what I am painting. Seeking out the spirit of my subject creates a deeper meaning in my paintings beyond the ordinary. From my Artist Alley Studio and Gallery I paint what is not seen and have revealed those unseen elements in museum and zoo exhibits, art shows and art lessons to aspiring artists for more than 50 years.
