Artist's Description

"Callahan City, Texas Cemetery: Gone To A Better Land" By: The GYPSY AKA; J.A. George

The grave of Caroline Daughter of C. & M.T. Estes. Died August 12, 1884. Lived 5 years & 6 Months. Jesus Loves Little Children. - Callahan City Cemetery was established prior to the organization of Callahan County, Texas in 1877. Burial place of many Pioneers and Confederate Soldiers.

This cemetery is all that remains of the town of Callahan City, Texas which was the first county seat of Callahan County. When the county seat was moved to Belle Plaine, Texas in 1877 it marked the beginning of the end for Callahan City. The same fate befell Belle Plaine when the County seat later moved to Baird, Texas where it remains to this day.

This lonely and desolate cemetery stands tribute to how fleeting life on the frontier was for those brave enough to try and tame it.

About The GYPSY

The GYPSY

I am a Romani American Artist. My name is J.A. George but you may call me, as my friends do, The GYPSY. As a former Zookeeper and lifelong lover of nature I have a unique perspective on Animals and Conservation. When I create my art, whether Animal or Landscape or both combined, I seek not to create reality or fantasy but to find the spirit of what I am painting. Seeking out the spirit of my subject creates a deeper meaning in my paintings beyond the ordinary. From my Artist Alley Studio and Gallery I paint what is not seen and have revealed those unseen elements in museum and zoo exhibits, art shows and art lessons to aspiring artists for more than 50 years.
